Live Wedding Painting at an Intimate Backyard Wedding in Arden Hills, Minnesota
Some weddings are grand ballroom celebrations, while others remind you that the most meaningful moments often happen at home.
Alyssa and Griffin chose to exchange their vows in the backyard of the groom's parents' home overlooking Lake Johanna in Arden Hills, Minnesota. With beautiful summer skies, close family and friends, and the lake just beyond the ceremony space, the setting felt both personal and beautifully relaxed.
As a Twin Cities live wedding painter, these intimate celebrations are some of my favorites to paint. Every wedding has its own personality, and this one was filled with thoughtful details that reflected the couple and the community surrounding them.
A Backyard Ceremony on Lake Johanna
I arrived a few hours before the ceremony to begin painting the landscape and establish the composition before guests arrived. One of the advantages of live wedding painting is being able to capture the atmosphere of the day as it unfolds, from changing light to the energy of family and friends gathering together.
The ceremony overlooked Lake Johanna, creating a peaceful backdrop for Alyssa and Griffin's vows. Rather than focusing only on the couple, I wanted the painting to preserve the feeling of the entire scene: the archway and cross they carefully selected for their ceremony, the summer greenery, and the richness of colors in both the sky and lake.
From Backyard Ceremony to Park Reception
One of the most memorable aspects of the day was that the celebration didn't end in the backyard.
After the ceremony, everyone packed up and headed just a few minutes away to Tony Schmidt Regional Park, where the reception continued under the park shelter. It was such a fun transition and gave the day a relaxed, community-centered feel that suited the couple perfectly.
While guests enjoyed cocktail hour and dinner, I continued developing the painting, adding more color, depth, and detail as the evening progressed.
A Wedding Built by Friends and Family
One of the things that stood out most was how many talented friends and family helped make the wedding possible.
The photographer was a family friend, the catering was prepared by someone close to the couple, and the entire day felt like a true community effort. Dinner featured delicious Jamaican chicken.
Then came one of the day's unexpected highlights.
Partway through the reception, an ice cream truck happened to pull into the park. Before long, guests were lining up for cones and frozen treats, turning an ordinary summer evening into one of those spontaneous moments that no one could have planned, but everyone will remember.
Creating a Live Wedding Painting
Throughout the reception, guests stopped by my easel to watch the painting evolve from loose brushstrokes into a finished scene. One of my favorite parts of live wedding painting is seeing people return throughout the evening, noticing new details each time they stop by.
After the wedding, I completed additional studio refinements to bring out even more depth, color, and detail before delivering the finished artwork to Alyssa and Griffin.
My hope is that years from now, their painting won't simply remind them what their wedding looked like, but what it felt like to stand together overlooking Lake Johanna, surrounded by the people who love them most.
